Here we are, we have persevered. If you have stayed with me the entire series, we find ourselves today at the final quality of love that Paul outlines in 1 Corinthians 13. And what is this final quality that Paul leaves us with? “Always Perseveres” Most of us think of an athletic accomplishment like a race when we hear the word persevere. Just for reference sake, I looked up the definition for persevere and it is as follows: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. There you have it. Post done. What’s next? All kidding aside, the definition of perseverance leaves us little room … Continue reading Always Perseveres
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. If you know anything about Cleveland sports, you know that one thing we have cornered the market on is HOPE. If you’re a fan in Cleveland, you know what it means to hope. We’ve been doing it a long time. a LOOONG time. But I doubt that is what Paul was speaking of when he said: “Always Hopes” As we look at the second to last quality of love in this series on 1 Corinthians 13, we find a word that be very difficult in many relationships. Hoping he’ll come to church Hoping she … Continue reading Always Hopes
I’m wrapping up the Love Chapter series from 1 Corinthians 13 this week and Paul gets on a bit of a roll doesn’t he? The most challenging part is that he sticks that word “Always” in there. From verse 7: “Always Trusts” I might be okay with “occasionally” or “sometimes” maybe even “sporadically” but he had to say “always trusts”. That is a big bill to pay. Those are high expectations to live up to. I am pretty cynical by nature so this one is going to be tough to do. I hardly trust anyone, let alone myself. But according … Continue reading Always Trusts
While it has been sporadic, I have been blogging my way through 1 Corinthians 13, also known as “The Love Chapter”. When we last left the series of blog posts, I was up to the verse that says “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth”. To be honest, I would do this verse no justice. I did find a great post related to it and you can read that one HERE. With that, I am going to jump the next verse which states that: “It (love) always protects” FINALLY a verse from the “Love Chapter” that … Continue reading Always Protects
“and at the Festivus party, you gather your family around and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the years!” -Frank Costanza We’ve all been there. Maybe it was a parent, a spouse, or a “discussion” with your children. At some point in an argument “the list” comes up. It’s that mental list of things we keep of wrongs performed against us. It is a running list that, when the time is right, is unleashed against the person we are arguing with. It is usually introduced with the words “and another thing”. According to Paul in 1 … Continue reading No Record of Wrongs
Why oh why must this stuff all come together at once! Like the great philosopher George Costanza once said “Worlds are colliding and George is gettin’ upset!!!“. This weekend I had the opportunity to walk a mile in my wife’s shoes. Before you think I tried on a pair of her high heels, it’s a phrase, not literal. I am so glad she had the opportunity to attend “She Speaks” for the third time. It is a time of renewal for her and she really deserves it. It does, however, leave me in charge of the troops while she is … Continue reading Self Seeking, Easily Angered
I don’t know about you (or if anyone is even reading this series), but I’m about done with this Love Chapter from 1 Corinthians 13. I’ve had enough. It’s too convicting and I don’t like being uncomfortable. Not really but there is probably something to be said there…. Confession time….I’m moody. I mean really moody. I can change a mood in an instant and leave all of those around me wondering what just happened. A majority of the time, I like to laugh and have a good time. There are moments, times, days, when I can be so rude I … Continue reading Rude
I am always amazed at how something that God is speaking to me about suddenly comes through in other places. With the thoughts of the Love Chapter series sitting on my mind this weekend, it happened again. Our good friend Rachel Wojnarowski was kind enough to invite us to a gathering of families with children that have been diagnosed with Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). As I watched the parents care for their children, the following words came to my mind: Patient Kind Does not envy In continuing the series on the Love Chapter from 1 Corinthians 13, I have the vision in … Continue reading Love is…..
It pains me to write parts of this post. It really does. For on this day 40 years ago, my Mom and Dad welcomed me into this world (talk about patient!). If you know me, or ask my Wife, you will find out that the LAST thing I want to do is make some big spectacle out of this day. I’m not having trouble dealing with the “big four oh” or anything like that. Actually I just don’t see it as a big deal. As I’ve said, my body feels 60 and I act like I’m about 13 years old. … Continue reading Love is Kind
1 Corinthians 13: 4 says that “Love is Patient….” Really? I mean, really? Does it have to be? I’ll be really honest and say that one of my spiritual gifts is not patience. I am seriously lacking in this department. My wife, for example, has the patience of a Saint. If you need an example, we’ve been married 13 years now. That should give you an idea of how patient she is. She’s put up with me for that long. I was good with this whole love chapter thing until I read that (which isn’t saying much since it’s pretty much … Continue reading Love is Patient
Today starts a brief series I am going to do on my reflections on the “Love Chapter” (1 Corinthians 13). This morning started off with a bang. Paul gets right to the point doesn’t he? Imagine you were talking to someone and they said that they could do the following: Speak in tongues Prophecy Understand the mystery of God and are all knowing Literally move mountains Give all they have to the poor Surrender their body as a sacrifice I’m not sure about you, but that is a pretty strong resume. I would be impressed. I’d drop their name in … Continue reading It’s All About Love

I might be alone in this one but when I go to a sporting event and have to do stand for the National Anthem, I don’t often consider the words and take them to heart. I just repeat it in monotone like everyone else in the ballpark. When it’s over, it’s back to the game. I’m just being honest. This week I read that Carrie Underwood surprised her new husband at their wedding by having Brandon Heath sing his song “Love Never Fails” (below) for their first dance. I have been keeping that song warm all week and repeating the … Continue reading Love and the National Anthem
I wrote a post called “Thy Neighbor” back in January of 2007. You would think I would have learned from my post and my lesson at the time. Once again it is so easy to be the model of perfection behind the keyboard but when it comes to application…not so much. Last night we had another house showing. When we arrived back at the house, one of our neighbors was outside and said she spoke with the potential buyers. It turns out that they had some questions about the home which is directly behind ours (seen above). Particularly, they wanted … Continue reading Love Thy Neighbor
