Urban Sledding

Like most of the country, we got hit with our first blast of real winter weather today. It actually provided a great opportunity to stay indoors and relax for a day. The kids waited somewhat patiently, but we couldn’t hold them off forever. They just had to get outside. So we cleared the driveway and discovered a new pastime. We like to call it “Urban Sledding”. After playing “Traffic Cop” I got a chance to get in the act too. We didn’t forget about getting our littlest one that push she needed either. Continue reading Urban Sledding

Let That Pony Run

Tomorrow morning marks the start of another school year and the first time that all three of our children will be in school all day. I’m not going to lie this is one of my least favorite days of the year. Tonight we close out the summer and tomorrow morning begins one year older, one year closer to football parties, boys, girls, acne, first cars, first loves and broken hearts. Sorry…like I said, I’m not a big fan of this night. I just put my kids to bed and quietly whispered a prayer of protection over each one of them … Continue reading Let That Pony Run

Proud Papa!

Yesterday morning two of our three children took part in a kids triathlon sponsored by our local municipal pool. This was the second attempt at the event as last weeks scheduled date was rained out. I am so proud of my kids for accepting the challenge and being very excited about doing so. They both did great. Due to the layout of the course, it was difficult to get to all of the spots for pictures, but here are a few I captured. Continue reading Proud Papa!

To Train Up A Child

There I was, enjoying “the day after” the big win against Duke today and then this picture popped up. Now I can’t stop looking at it. It gripped me the moment I saw it. The more I look at it, the more I see. This is not a story about my obsession with the Tar Heels. It’s not a story about how fond we are of Tyler Hansbrough. Rather it is a story about that often quoted verse from Proverbs 22:6 that most parents can quote “Train up a child in the way they should go and when he is … Continue reading To Train Up A Child

The Foundation

There was one other quote that I had to commit to memory from the book “The Difference A Father Makes” by Ed Tandy McGlasson. When I read it, it practically jumped out off of the page and tapped me one the shoulder. I think it hit a fear that many of us have as parents. As my son has gotten older and we can communicate further why we do things like discipline, I have taken a new approach. I have recently let him on to the secret that “this is my first time at this too” and “I’ve never been … Continue reading The Foundation

The Difference A Father Makes

While at the All Pro Dad Experience, we were all given a gift bag with several items in it. Arguably the most valuable thing was a book entitled “The Difference A Father Makes” by Ed Tandy McGlasson. I sat down yesterday to read it and was caught by something I read. An involved father can make all the difference in a child’s life. His love and care can be the deciding factor in helping a young one become who he or she was created to be. When our hearts are filled with security and trust in a dad who loves … Continue reading The Difference A Father Makes

APD Father Kid Experience Day

Tomorrow my good friend Brian and I are taking a road trip with our oldest children to the All Pro Dad Father & Kids Experience in Cincinnati. The event is at Paul Brown Stadium where the Bengals used to play. As an added bonus, we’re hoping to catch up with fellow bloggers and friends Rindy, Matt and Paul Peterson before we head north to go home. I’m sure I’ll have a wrap up sometime next week too. Continue reading APD Father Kid Experience Day

Fear the Vest???

Poor Tressel Bobblehead. I was cleaning my office yesterday and left “the vest” sitting out where little hands could find it. I’m not sure which one of the 3 got a hold of him, but the results can be clearly seen. I did my best to put humpty dumpty back together again, but he now has a permanent “hitch” in his neck. Now everytime I see it on my desk he looks mad at me. Sorta freaks me out. Good thing it wasn’t a Roy Williams or Dean Smith. Originally posted to A UNC FAN Continue reading Fear the Vest???

3rd Base Coaching Box

This summer marks season 3 of little league baseball for “The Boy” and I. It all started with T-Ball and now we’re in our second year of “Coach Pitch”. Each game I take my place in the 3rd Base Coaching Box to do my best to bring our kids home. For the most part I enjoy it. Then there are nights like last night. Being on the 3rd Base side means that I get to hear the comments from the parents of the other team. Most nights it is good fun. Last night was brutal. Being that I am not … Continue reading 3rd Base Coaching Box

Loose Lips

With only 4 days left in the school year, I scheduled to have lunch with “the boy” at school today. He enjoys having me come in (I think it’s the fast food I bring) and I enjoy stepping into his world for 30 minutes. I get the opportunity to observe his circles of influence and see what the other kids at his school are like. I took the opportunity today to ask about several people in the cafeteria. One of the men I inquired about was the guy in charge of keeping the cafeteria and lunch hour running like a … Continue reading Loose Lips

Priceless….

I may bleed Carolina Blue, but no matter where I may roam, a large part of my heart belongs to my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Thanks to the ultimate hook-up from my friend Brian, “The Boy” and I had a chance on Saturday night to soak it all in. Check this out: Brian won four tickets from the local sports station to take part in their “Fan Bus to Jacobs Progressive Field”. Knowing I love the Tribe, he was kind enough to extend his winnings to “The Boy” and I. So Saturday we took off for C-Town with a bus … Continue reading Priceless….

Sunday is Mother’s Day

I.O.U by Jimmy Dean You know most people look through their wallets or their pocket books and, way down at the bottom, past the credit cards and baby pictures, green stamps, you usually find a little ‘ol dog-eared piece of poetry. I was cleaning out my wallet the other day and ran across a whole bunch of I.O.U’s, some of ‘em thirty years overdue. The funny thing is that all these I.O.U’s are owed to one person and I kinda feel like right now might be a pretty good time for an accountin’. Mom, you listenin’? Mom, I.O.U. for so … Continue reading Sunday is Mother’s Day

For The Love Of…

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane…shall we? For those that have followed this thing since the beginning, you might remember when I wrote a post 3 years ago about a dilemma I was having (HERE). Matter of fact, last time the Tar Heels played for a championship, Heather almost had a baby…literally! (Details HERE) So it just seems appropriate that we are steamrolling our way into Final Four weekend and the Karma is everywhere. See if you can follow the bouncing ball on this one. You might have noticed that I am trying to discern a major decision which … Continue reading For The Love Of…

I said…You heard…

Kids and lessons from our Heavenly Father go hand in hand don’t they? The timing is sometimes scary. This morning was one of those moments. Let me explain. Last night as I tucked my daughter into bed, we were discussing “All Pro Dad” (APD) on Saturday. She gets very excited every month to attend APD. So when she awoke this morning, she was all excited to go. One problem, APD is on Saturday and today is Wednesday. I tried to explain that to her but it didn’t seem to help her disappointment. I explained that “I said it was on … Continue reading I said…You heard…

Saturday’s All Pro Dad Day!

Wow…where did March go? A new month must mean that this Saturday is another All Pro Dad day. The topic this month is “Caring for the less fortunate“. We are privileged to have a guest speaker from Faith Mission in Columbus, Ohio with us. He will share a little bit about Faith Mission, but even more exciting is what will happen between our meetings in April and May. Based on the information from our guest speaker, Dads and kids will have the opportunity to spend the month gathering needed items and raising awareness of the less fortunate in our community. … Continue reading Saturday’s All Pro Dad Day!

I Knew This Day Would Come

Somewhere in this bald head of mine, I guess I always knew this day would come. The day when I would officially start getting beat at Playstation 2 by “The Boy” on a regular basis. Don’t tell anyone, but tonight, he extended the winning streak to 4 games in a row. The games have been different (NCAA 08, NCAA 2k8, Backyard Basketball and NBA Live 06), but the results are starting to speak for themselves. Gone are the days of choosing Columbus State Community College while he chose North Carolina to keep things fair. He’s crushing me no matter who … Continue reading I Knew This Day Would Come
