Where is your joy?

I’ve been struggling with joy lately. It would seem the daily grind, growing older, stress, situations and, well, “life” have made it feel like jumping into a roller coaster of emotions. Up and down, round and round. The hills are great, the valleys are not. In my devotional time this morning, I was reminded of a quote by John Ortberg from his book “The Life You’ve Always Wanted” regarding our need to find a “Joy Mentor”. We need to identify a few people who play this role in our lives-especially if we tend to be joy-challenged. Make a joy appointment … Continue reading Where is your joy?

Damaged

“My heart’s so low, I’m so much to manage. I think you should know that I’ve been damaged” – TLC I once read the book “To Own a Dragon” by Donald Miller. I really like Donald Miller’s writing. In this book, he told stories of portions of his life that left him “damaged”. I have to admit that I am damaged too. I would also admit that in the course of my life, I’ve done plenty of damage. What is dangerous is there are times when I will re-visit those “damaged” times in my memory. It’s even more dangerous when … Continue reading Damaged

“Black Friday”

If you’re like me, you are probably just about to go crazy after all of the “Black Friday” ads on TV today. The parade this morning was out of control. It was like a 3 hour commercial with a little parade mixed in occasionally. If you’re headed out in the morning or just making your own list and checking it twice, below are my recommendations for Christmas gifts this year. I’ve personally tested each one. They are lead free and will make great gifts. I highly recommend them all. Happy hunting! 1. “Iris to Iris” by Building 429. Might be … Continue reading “Black Friday”

The Lord of the Gift

One blessing I can never put into words is the blessing of some great friends in my life. I say this not to boast, rather that I am amazed at the way that God has intertwined our lives in his providence. As I was reading about spiritual gifts in “If You Want to Walk on Water” by John Ortberg, I couldn’t help but think of two friends in particular. Both have given me gifts recently that are irreplaceable, unforgettable and treasured. Both gifts were not necessary, but were given because both of these individuals have, what I consider, the spiritual … Continue reading The Lord of the Gift

Book Reviews

I had an opportunity the past week or so to read two of the books that I have really been looking forward to. The first was “When the Game is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box” by John Ortberg. I’m a pretty big fan of Ortberg and this one didn’t disappoint at all. There are times when it is good to just go back to the basics, take a pause and evaluate some things. This book will do that. You will find yourself taking some stock in what matters most. If you are a fan of John Ortberg’s … Continue reading Book Reviews
