I’m not a creative. I’m not artistic. I honestly wish I was. Seriously. I have mad respect for people with a creative mind and artistic eye. If you think about it, they shape the way we view the world. Without creative minds, I wonder if the world wouldn’t be more bland and basic. I admire them. I really, really do. With that in mind, you can bet I gladly accepted the opportunity to review the new book from Michael Gungor called “The Crowd, The Critic, and the Muse: A Book for Creators“. I’m so glad I did. While I am not a creative, I loved this look into their culture from a highly respected artist.
In The Crowd, the Critic, and the Muse, Michael Gungor takes an uncompromising–and humorous–look at our creative and created world. Surveying pop songs and church services, fine art and movies, Gungor shows what these works of creation reveal about us–for better and worse–and offers a powerful argument for why we can do better.
An award-winning, globetrotting musician, Gungor also reveals his personal journey as an artist and creator, a tale of moving from innocence to wisdom, from simplicity to complexity and back again, a tale of leaving home and returning in a new, better, and more creative way.
For my creative friends, this is a must read. You will love Gungor’s thoughts and wisdom. Even if you’re not a creative, you’ll still enjoy this book. While at times humorous, I found it very insightful and agreed with much of his thoughts and views on our current culture. Especially “Christian Music” and “Worship”. It was an opportunity to let my inner creative lose a bit.
I give “The Crowd, The Critic, and the Muse: A Book for Creators” a 4 out of 5.
