Nothin’ To Die For?

timmcgraw2006_350.jpgA few weeks ago I downloaded the Latest CD from Tim McGraw called “Let it Go“. I will be honest and say it’s just “alright”. There is, however, one song that has been stuck in my head, my thoughts and my memory all week. It’s called “Nothin’ to Die For”. The same man that brought us “Live like you were dying” delivers this one. I thought it was dumb the first time I heard it, but this chorus keeps ringing in my head!

He opens the song talking about a driver not thinking anything about having a few more drinks before climbing behind the wheel. Then he hits the first chorus. The one that has been eating at me is the second verse. Here it is:

So what’s the harm in a little fun
‘Cause you’re off to work before the sun everyday
And the inbox outbox locks you in and the money you make ain’t worth the time you spend to make your pay
The doctor says ‘man your numbers they don’t lie’
The graveyard’s full of folks that didn’t have time to die

[Chorus]
You’d give your last breath to your wife
Take a bullet for your kids
Lay your life down for your country for your Jesus for your friends
There’s a whole lot of things you say you’re living for
You’ve got to fight it somehow, stop and turn around
‘Cause this ain’t nothin’ to die for

When you really HEAR those words, it’s powerful. The idea is that I say I would do anything for my wife, my family, Jesus and my friends….while I am working myself to death. In other words, the actions are speaking louder than the words. Work, stress, fears, failures “ain’t nothin’ to die for. Ironically, I’ll be on the road for 4 hours tomorrow driving to a customer event for work. Something tells me that the words to this song will continue to take up residence in my thoughts. Something also tells me I will be pondering what I would really live and die for.
